Greater Manchester U16 Girls 2 v 1 Nottinghamshire U16 Girls

Nottinghamshire Under 16 Girls’ completed the Autumn term with a 2-1 defeat by Greater Manchester in the 2nd Round of the English Schools’ F.A County Championship at Oldham. After a three and a half hour journey, a rushed warm-up and facing inclement weather, it took some time for the squad to get going as they took on a home side fielding a number of Manchester United, City and Everton RTC players. Notts fell behind early in the game when a speculative shot slipped through Sophie Towle’s hands. Greater Manchester scored again 10 minutes later and big defeat seemed possible.

Nottinghamshire though gradually improved and defended well with Towle atoning for her error with a series of fine saves while the pace of Annalise Daniel and Eden Burch up front occasionally relieved the pressure but it was not until the second half that they created much danger. A mixed night for Towle was ended in the 60th minute by a head injury while making a courageous save but her replacement, centre back Jewel Francis Crossley made some unorthodox saves and this seemed to encourage the visitors. Daniel made it 2-1 in the 70th minute with a free kick which looped over the keeper who parried the ball it into the net but the late pressure could not bring an equaliser. However, the whole squad deserve great credit as their excellent spirit was always apparent with captain Neave Archer setting the example and Ella McManus and Courtney Caunt also shining.
