The Nottinghamshire Schools’ F.A. Under 16 County Squad produced one of their best performances for many seasons when they met Greater Manchester Schools at the Vestacare Stadium, Oldham in the 2nd Round of the English Schools’ County Championship last Wednesday. Notts started at a high tempo which seemed to rattle the home side into errors and the concession of free-kicks, so it was no surprise when on 20 minutes, a blatant push brought a penalty which Ross McParland hit fiercely into the corner of the net. A home defender was then close to conceding an own goal when his pass back was too strong for the keeper and was heading for the empty net before another defender raced back just in time to clear.

Notts did score a second goal though before half time when a header from a corner bobbled around the area and as the ball fell to Jake Wright he drilled it past the keeper. Manchester made a determined start to the second half and a fierce free-kick from 20 yards made it 2-1. Two Nottinghamshire substitutions helped counter frequent Manchester attacks as well as creating the two best chances of the half as the visitors held out for a deserved 2-1 win and a home tie against Shropshire in Round 3.

The third of four Nottinghamshire Finals of the E.S.F.A./Danone Under 11 competitions for Primary schools was won by Linby cum Papplewick School who will now go forward to represent Nottinghamshire in the Midlands Round of the Small Schools’ event next term. They will be joined by the winners of the other three competitions - Girls, Districts and School Teams.
