The U19 Individual Schools Fox Cup
Becket School 3 1 Rushcliffe School
A closely fought 2 - 1 victory several days previously for Rushcliffe School in a South Notts Schools FA Cup semi final set up this County Cup Final as promising to be a tight affair and so it proved to be - probably more so than the final score suggests. Although the pitch at Bilborough Pelican FC was in near perfect condition, a very strong gusting wind made things difficult for both teams.
The game got off to an explosive start with two goals coming in quick succession in the opening five minutes. Tom Wilson opened the scoring for Rushcliffe with an excellent header from ten yards out following a right wing corner. Becket's response was immediate with Rushcliffe failing to clear the ball properly several times a cross from the right was met on the volley by Joel English to level the scores.
The game, being played in a good spirit, continued to be an entertaining, competitive and close contest at the beginning of the second period. It was Becket, however, who got the break through seven minutes after half time to take the lead for the first time in the match, the ball falling at the feet of Chris Watkins for him to drill it home from 10 yards out.
A third Becket goal ten minutes from the end sealed a hard fought victory with Toby Sewell volleying a speculative shot from outside the area that looped over everyone, including the Rushcliffe keeper who was marginally off his line and found the back of the net.
Peter Milner, the ex Head of PE at Rushcliffe School and Steve Murray, a Becket staff member and Chairman of Nottingham Schools FA presented the medals to the two teams and the John Fox Cup to Peter Vickers, the Becket Captain.
