U13 Boys Individual Schools Graham Cordell Memorial Cup
Trinity School 5 Ashfield School 2
Hot favourites, Trinity School who had scored 39 goals in 5 games to reach the final of the Nottinghamshire Graham Cordell Memorial Cup which was also played for the Minute Maid Cup, were given a good game by a talented Ashfield side who never gave up against a Trinity team which included seven Nottingham Schools’ representative players.
The game seemed to be going according to expectation when Trinity raced into a two goal lead through excellent finishing by Louis Greenway-Tambini and Jovan Mullings and could have gone further ahead but for some brave saves by Ashfield keeper, Oliver Medley. Although Trinity, with Joseph Dodoo and Michael Thomas dominating the midfield areas, were generally on top, Ashfield were always a threat with striker Jonathan Booth a strong runner. Booth reduced the arrears after 25 minutes to make the half-time score 2-1 in Trinity’s favour.
The Nottingham school began the second half as they had the first and two early goals from Jahmal Salmon and Jovan Mullings put them 4-1 ahead but despite the deficit, Ashfield with Jordan Slack supporting Booth always looked dangerous while Callum Purseglove and Danny Wilson on the wings in an attacking formation also played well.
With Ashfield pushing forward, Jovan Mullings made it 5-1 for Trintiy but Ashfield, fighting hard to the end pulled a goal back through Booth and the same player was unlucky not to complete his hat-trick when Trinity’s Oliver Pannell deflected a fine effort just over the bar.
Both sides deserve great credit for their attitude throughout the game and on the form they showed in the final, both teams should represent Nottinghamshire well in the national rounds of the Minute Maid competition. The Nottinghamshire Minute Maid Cup and the Graham Cordell Memorial Cup were presented to Trinity by Abbey Sturton, representing Minute Maid and Bob Young, the Chairman of the Nottinghamshire Schools’ F.A.
All in all, a superb morning’s football with sporting behaviour from all four sides and the spectators and magnificent support from Collingham Football Club who are so supportive of the Nottinghamshire Schools’ F.A. Thanks are also due to Abbey Sturton, representing the sponsors, Coca-Cola Enterprises.
