The U11 Inter Association Reprotec County Cup
Nottingham 2 v 1 Bassetlaw
The Under 11 County Primary Cup on Tuesday 13 May at Highfields was another final that had to be re-arranged because of the torrential rains of the previous week. Bassetlaw travelled south to meet Nottingham, looking to retain the Inter Association Cup they won 12 months ago at Harworth. The match was also played for the Peter Evans Memorial Trophy – sixteen years after the tragic death of the Nottingham Schools member in a car accident.
The early exchanges saw Bassetlaw create the first chances but these were easily dealt with by Hollis in the Nottingham goal. Parton had Nottingham’s first real opportunity but his shot was well over. A good run by Waring for Bassetlaw saw him plant a shot just past the post underlining the problems the Bassetlaw forwards were causing Nottingham’s defence at this stage of the game but they could not apply the final finish as the two teams reached half time still level.
Nottingham began the second period in more determined mood and took the lead fifteen minutes into the second half when following a corner and several attempted clearances by the Bassetlaw defence, Webb headed the ball past Hyland to give the City side the advantage. Bassetlaw responded almost immediately with Stockdale launching a massive effort from 35 yards out that sailed over the Nottingham keeper to level the scores.
Both teams now searched for the winner and this came in the dying minutes when, from another corner, Nottingham’s number 12, Adam, turned the ball in to give his side an hard fought victory. The County Primary Cup was handed over to the Nottingham squad by Bob Young, Chairman of the Nottinghamshire Schools’ FA and the Peter Evans Memorial Trophy was presented by Malcolm Evans, Peter’s son.
