Under 13 Match Reports
1 March
South Notts 2 4 Sheffield
Due to absence and illness South Notts were only able to field a bare eleven players and whilst playing some great football and generally having the better of the match lost to those ever-present defensive frailties.
Kicking with the wind South Notts took the lead after ten minutes when Remello Nangle (Wheldon) beat three players along the bye line before squaring to Jordan Knight (Wheldon) to score from a yard out. Sheffield could count themselves unlucky when a shot from the edge of the area rebounded into play via the bar. Equally only a goal line clearance saved them from going two down before the interval.
Having to face the wind after the interval the South Notts defence were again found wanting, conceding three goals in rapid time. Failure to close down and prevent a shot from the edge of the area saw them concede the first two and then a long ball over the top of a square defence presented Sheffield with a third. Again true to form South Notts did respond and after some great play from Ryan Ejezie (Becket) Jeremy Moran (Christ the King) headed home the resulting corner. As South Notts now pushed for an equaliser again a long ball had them in trouble. As the forward raced clear he was felled by Liam Bogues (Redhill) racing from his goal. Bogues who was lucky still to be on the pitch, made a fantastic save from the resulting free kick. As the ball came back into play it was only the Sheffield forwards who reacted to smash the ball home.

Hull 5 1 South Notts
This was a big game for both sides with Hull looking to secure the Area D title ahead of Nottingham and South Notts giving themselves a chance of honours if either of the top two sided were to slip up. Whilst both sides started well Hull were generally getting the upper hand, having two long-range efforts easily gathered by Liam Bogues (Redhill) in the South Notts goal. South Notts were unlucky however not to take the lead after fifteen minutes when the home keeper was beaten but the ball wouldn’t come down for Remello Nangle (Wheldon) and was eventually cleared. The game turned in two minutes just prior to half time when Hull scored twice. The Hull right-winger was allowed time and space to cross to the far post for a simple header and then with three South Notts defenders having the opportunity to clear Liam Bogues was given no chance from close range for the second.
Any thoughts of a second half come back were dispelled within five minutes of the restart when a long range effort, swirling in the wind, crept in just under the bar. Hull were now rampant and South Notts heads went down after conceding a fourth although they were to get a goal of their own. Joe Brothwell (Carlton le Willows) cut into the box and coolly shot across the keeper. Hull added a fifth from the penalty spot in the last few minutes. The result in no way reflected outstanding performances by Jeremy Moran (Christ the King) and Connor Scott-Parkin (Redhill) in the heart of the South Notts defence.

South Notts 4 3 Wakefield
Having completely dominated the first half South Notts could not believe that the sides remained level at the break. Good passing and general team play saw South Notts create numerous chances but only convert once. A corner from the left was well met by Connor Scott-Parkin (Redhill) whose firm header gave the keeper little chance. With Greg Simmons (Eastwood), Will Coutts (Harry Carlton) and Joe Brothwell ( Carlton le Willows) all going close it seemed only a matter of how many South Notts would score. However just on the stroke of half time a goal kick was knocked back towards the South Notts goal and as the defence looked on the Wakefield forward was allowed to run through and beat Kieron Poland (Redhill).
South Notts who continued to play good football took the lead when Remello Nangle’s (Wheldon) shot across the keeper found the corner of the net. When Joe Brothwell added a third five minutes later after good work by Ryan Ejezie (Becket) the game should have been won. However, as against Derby , South Notts lost their shape as players looked to add their name to the score sheet and it was to nearly cost them the game. Wakefield were level with ten minutes remaining after scoring identical goals. On both occasions a simple ball over the top for the forward to run on to undid a flat South Notts defence. With a minute remaining the game took a final twist when Ryan Ejezie was brought done after good work along the bye line. The resulting penalty was well converted by Callum Cocks (Redhill).

South Notts 2 2 Luton
South Notts were required to produce their best display of the season to match a very good Luton side. Both sides started brightly with South Notts nearly taking the lead after five minutes when Joe Brothwell (Carlton le Willows) saw his shot grabbed at the last minute by the visiting keeper. The sides then traded four goals prior to half-time with South Notts twice taking the lead. Remello Nangle (Wheldon) opened the scoring with a low shot into the corner but South Notts conceded themselves within minutes. With the South Notts defence backing away they invited the Luton midfielder to try his luck from just outside the area and he obliged with a stunning shot wide of Liam Bogues. South Notts did not learn from this and conceded a second immediately afterwards when Nangle had again given them the lead. The second half saw both sides playing good passing football with neither team really looking as though they would get a third. With only minutes remaining Nangle was unlucky not to complete his hat trick and give South Notts the win when after a good run he saw his shot strike the foot of the post.

South Notts 5 3 Derby
Due to a depleted squad Callum Cocks (Redhill) was asked to leave his normal full back duties and step in to midfield. He was to repay this confidence with his versatility twice within the first four minutes. In the first minute the Derby full back failed to shepherd the ball out of play and was robbed by Ryan Ejezie (Becket) who saw his goal bound shot handled on the line. The resulting penalty kick comfortably converted by Cocks in to the roof of the net. He doubled his tally three minutes later when an exchange of passes on the edge of the area saw his shot go in via the post. If onlookers thought Derby were shell shocked they were to be proved wrong as they created three good chances of their own. It was therefore no surprise when they pulled a goal back via a free kick from the edge of the area. With both sides looking to add to their tally it was South Notts who added two more goals prior to the break via Remello Nangle (Wheldon). A ball through the middle saw him beat the advancing keeper and then the best move of the game saw him collect his second. A well-constructed move down the right resulted in a fine cross which was calmly headed home from the middle of the area.
When South Notts grabbed a fifth early in the second half via Ryan Ejezie it seemed only a matter of how many more they would score. However, as is so often the case, the team lost its shape as players tried to add their name to the score sheet. Derby breaks were met with less and less resistance and it was no surprise when they added two late goals of their own.
Nottingham 3 2 South Notts
Having conceded six goals in their previous meeting with the City South Notts were determined to make amends. Kicking into the wind South Notts were on the back-foot for the majority of the first half.
Whilst Nottingham created chances, they we thwarted on three occasions by Liam Bogues (Redhill), with good saves in the South Notts goal. Just as it looked that the sides might go in to half-time level Nottingham took the lead from a corner when their centre forward was left unchallenged to head a simple goal.
The second half saw South Notts coming increasingly into the game and they were unlucky not to equalise when Joe Brothwell was fed in down the left and he saw his lob hit the inside of the post. As the ball bounced back in to play Nottingham were lucky not to concede a penalty when Remello Nangle (Wheldon) was upended. Ten minutes later Nottingham doubled their lead with an exact replica of their opening goal.
The game then seemed safe as they added a third with the South Notts defence unable to clear the ball from a scramble. If Nottingham now felt they could relax they were wrong. With five minutes remaining Remello Nangle struck a shot from the right side of the area, which found the bottom corner. Then with only a minute remaining a free-kick from the left was flicked home by Will Coutts (Harry Carlton). This was a much improved display by South Notts and if they had the same belief at the start of the game that they had at the end they may well have taken at least a point.
Sheffield 4 4 South Notts
The match started on a pitch that was still frozen in places and retaining footing was a problem for the players. South Notts started very brightly and took the lead after five minutes when the Sheffield goalkeeper allowed a Remello Nangle (Wheldon) shot to squeeze under his body. Sheffield, who have only suffered one defeat this season, were unfazed and went on to take a commanding lead before half-time.
After fifteen minutes the Sheffield left winger was allowed to get to the bye line and his cross was easily knocked in from six yards. A repeat performance this time down the left led to Sheffield ’s second whilst a third was added just before the break when South Notts were unable to clear a goal mouth scramble. The score line could have been far worse with Kieron Poland (Arnold Hill) making two good saves and a shot coming back from the underside of the bar.
Half-time changes seemed to have given South Notts a better shape but they were to unluckily concede a fourth ten minutes into the second half. Liam Bogues (Redhill) in attempting to clear a harmless looking through ball saw his clearance strike Connor Scott-Parkin (Redhill) and loop over his head allowing the Sheffield striker the easy task of side-footing in to an empty goal.
Sheffield had every right to think the game was now won but if they had seen previous South Notts games they might not have been so confident. The last twenty minutes of the game saw South Notts dominating and when Will Coutts (Harry Carlton) cut inside the full back before firing home over the keeper it seemed little more than a consolation. However when, with three minutes remaining, a Joe Brothwell (Carlton le Willows) freekick from just outside the area found it’s way in to the goal through a crowded penalty area Sheffield alarm bells justifiably started ringing. The last attack of the match was to bring an equaliser - a good cross from Will Coutts found Josh Rae ( Kimberley ) unmarked at the far post to fire home from close range.
South Notts 2 2 Worksop & Retford
This was yet again a game that either side could have won but it was a fair result in the end. Worksop & Retford started very confidently and South Notts had hardly touched the ball when they found themselves a goal down within a minute. Worksop were knocking the ball around with some excellent controlled football with the home side unable to get out of their half. It was only a matter of time before a second arrived which it did after ten minutes, following a very good flowing move.
As the half progressed South Notts gradually clawed their way back and were level by half-time. A good cross by Will Coutts (Harry Carlton) was only half cleared to Remello Nangle (Wheldon) who fired low in to the corner for his tenth goal of the season. Worksop were further stunned five minutes later when Ryan Ejezie (Becket) was brilliantly fed through the middle by Nangle, rounded the advancing keeper to stroke the ball home.
The second half was to be totally dominated by South Notts with Liam Bogues (Redhill) not having to make a direct save for the rest of the game. South Notts were now pushing their back four of Alex Spencer-Teansley, Callum Cocks, Connor Scott-Parkin (Redhill) and Jeremy Moran (Christ the King) up to support a dominant midfield. Worksop were lucky to survive on three occasions when Josh Rae (Kimberley) and Ryan Ejezie both saw efforts hit the top of the bar and then Will Coutts rounded the keeper only to find the angle too tight. South Notts can take a lot of proud from this performance both in regard to team spirit and self-belief that nearly won them a match that seemed lost after the first ten minutes.
Leicester 4 5 South Notts
After sharing nine goals with the City and then eight with Hull in previous weeks, South Notts were to share nine with Leicester.
Leicester took the lead after only five minutes when from a corner their centre back was totally unchallenged to head firmly home. Both sides had further chances before South Notts equalised with Remello Nangle (Wheldon) beating the offside trap to slide the ball past the advancing keeper. South Notts true to form conceded a second more or less straight away and it was a carbon copy of the Leicester opener allowing a free header from a corner.
Leicester added a third shortly after half-time when the Leicester forward rode two poor challenges before being allowed to run twenty yards and slot home. If South Notts have one thing in abundance it is team spirit and after Remello Nangle scored his second Will Coutts (Harry Carlton) struck an equaliser. South Notts were now looking the more dominant and Remello Nangle completed his hat-trick with a well struck shot from the edge of the area.
South Notts again succumbed to an equaliser when Liam Bogues (Redhill) was beaten at his near post from an angle. Both sides were now looking for a winner with five minutes remaining and it was to go to South Notts when Will Coutts added his second with a shot over the keeper from the right side of the area. Mention needs to be made of both Jeremy Moran (Christ the King) and Josh Rae (Kimberley) who lifted the team with their work rate and desire to win.

Hull 5 3 South Notts
For the second week running South Notts were to be their own worse enemies creating three good goals but gifting four to Hull with individual errors. Hull who are riding high and have the luxury of fielding Hull City Academy players took the lead after five minutes. The Hull midfield were totally unchallenged and allowed to head a goal kick straight back to their forward who finished with a well struck shot. South Notts were lucky not to go two down when a well struck shot hit the inside of the post before going safe.
South Notts, who were looking dangerous themselves, were to equalise after 20 minutes when Remello Nangle (Wheldon) cut in from the right before beating the goalkeeper at the near post. Hull struck back more or less straight away with another gift. Two South Notts defenders completely missed a free kick into the area allowing the forward to poke the ball past Liam Bogues (Redhill).
The second half was evenly poised until Liam Bogues, possibly South Notts most improved player, unfortunately allowed a shot to slip through his hands and over the line. South Notts hit back ten minutes later when good work down the right by Will Coutts (Harry Carlton) fed Remello Nangle who after beating the last defender squared past the keeper allowing Greg Simmons to side foot in to an empty net.
Both sides were now creating chances but it was Hull who grabbed the next goal. South Notts were not giving up and a great strike from the edge of the area from Remello Nangle again reduced the arrears. The game was to finally end with Hull ’s fifth when poor defending down the right allowed the ball to be squared across the box to the unmarked striker at the far post.

Barnsley 3 1 South Notts
The first 20 minutes saw South Notts U13’s produce some of their best football of the season so far. Barnsley were unable to cope with some slick passing and good movement. South Notts could easily have scored four before Barnsley had their first real chance but only had one goal to show for their dominance. Greg Simmons (Eastwood) collected a ball through the middle and lobbed the advancing keeper. Simmons and Will Coutts (George Spencer) were both to go close before Barnsley equalised out of the blue with a shot from an acute angle that sailed over Kieron Poland (Arnold Hill) and into the far corner.
Barnsley were to go in to the break a goal ahead when they were very fortunate to be awarded a fee-kick just inside the South Notts half. The resulting kick was over-hit and looked to be going harmlessly to the keeper when it took a wicked bounce to enter the goal just under the crossbar.
Both sides made numerous changes for the second half and this certainly affected the good standard of the first period with South Notts forgetting what had brought rewards before the break. Neither side were really creating any good chances but it was Barnsley who got the last goal of the game when a cross was allowed to go directly in. South Notts tried in vain to raise their game but looked to have a good goal disallowed for offside when Remello Nangle (Wheldon) rounded the keeper and then beat the defender on the goal line to side-foot home.
11 October
South Notts 5 0 New Newark Youth League Reps
An invitation challenge match took place on Thursday 11 October at Collingham FC between a New Newark Youth League Representative side and the South Notts U13 squad. The match was to officially launch the new floodlights that have been installed at Collingham's Station Road ground.
South Notts were to take the lead after only two minutes when Remello Nangle (Wheldon) was allowed time to control a cross, turn and rifle home from close range. This inspired a fifteen-minute period that saw South Notts produce a very high standard of football and it was no surprise when Ryan Ejezie (Becket) added a second cleverly flicking the ball over an advancing keeper. Whilst South Notts had further chances Newark to their credit were now creating problems of their own and it was to take two good saves from Liam Bogues (Redhill) to deny Newark ’s onrushing centre forward.
The game was however ended as a contest soon after the break when Greg Simmons (Eastwood) saw his first attempt saved but coolly beat the keeper with the rebound. As the teams tired on a large pitch gaps were appearing across the midfield. Whilst the central defensive pairing of Isaac Kemp and Josh Spademan (both Redhill) were restricting Newark to long range shots, South Notts were able to exploit the extra space and add three further goals. Greg Simmons notched his second whilst Joe Brothwell ( Carlton le Willows) fittingly added the last to crown a good performance down the left. Special mention should also be made of Billy Bennett (Col Frank Seeley) who orchestrated some fantastic football from his central midfield role .
