Nottinghamshire Schools’ Football Association Annual Report for Season 2009 / 2010
Honorary Secretary’s Report
It was inevitable that the wonderful record of the Nottinghamshire Association being represented by an individual school or district team in at least one of the English Schools’ FA national finals would some time come to an end. Despite Gedling Under 12 Girls reaching the national finals day of the Individual Schools 5-a-side at the Soccerdome in Derby and Hollywell Primary from Kimberley taking part in the national finals day of the Small Schools 7-a-side at the Watford FC training ground none of our representatives in national individual schools or district competitions made it to the final game.
Several other teams from the County though did reach the latter stages of national competitions. West Bridgford Boys Under 13s and Under 14s both got through to the last sixteen – the younger squad losing 5-3 to John Port School from Derby whilst the Under 14s, who had been national champions the previous season at the Under 13 age group, crashed out to West Hill School from Tameside suffering a 2-1 defeat. Trinity Under 15s from Nottingham battled through to the last 32 before going down 4-1 to Sheffield School, Tapton.
This was the last season that the Association would provide representatives from it’s County finals for the RAF Under 16 Cups in both the boys and girls competitions. The RAF sponsorship having finished, the competition will be run directly from ESFA Offices in Stafford from Round 1 in September. Unfortunately, it was not to be a successful campaign for our nominated schools – all four of them lost in the first national round. In the boys, Valley from Worksop lost 3-2 to Horsworth School from Leeds and Joseph Whitaker from Rainworth went down 3-0 to Charlton School from Telford.
In the Under 18 boys competition, George Spencer from Stapleford made it to the last 16 but found themselves up against a very good side in Ashton on Mersey School from Trafford, going down 4-1. In the national Inter Association competitions, Nottingham had the most success with their Under 13s reaching the last 16 in the country before losing 4-1 to Peterborough.
The ESFA Office took the Under 18, Under 16 and Under 16 Girls Inter County national competitions under their wings last season and the two boys squads were both drawn against West Yorkshire. In two close and exciting matches both sides lost by the odd goal – the Under 16s 1-0 at Forest Town FC and their older counterparts 2-1 at Collingham FC’s Station Lane ground.
An unfortunate draw in the round of the last sixteen in the Under 15 Girls national cup saw Trinity from Nottingham pitted against Valley from Worksop – the two sides fought out a 0-0 draw after extra time with Trinity squeezing through 6-5 on penalties. In the quarter-finals, Trinity took on Friary College from Cannock and despite being 3-1 up at the break, collapsed to lose 7-4.
Both of the Associations representatives in the national rounds of the Under 16 Cup for Girls fell at the first hurdle. Gedling came up against one of the traditionally strong footballing schools in Thomas Telford from Shropshire and were well beaten 6-1. Valley School from Worksop, with their third different age group side in the later rounds of a national cup, were drawn against the eventual winners, William Farr from Lincoln and went down 4-0.
The Under 16 Girls Representative squad played Lincolnshire in the first national round of the Inter County Knock Out Cup and managed a 1-0 win in a tough encounter thanks to an extra time winner from Katie Waddell. They then met Leicestershire, the eventual national champions in the second round and were on the wrong end of a close match, losing 1-0 – a result they were to reverse later in the season in the Midlands Counties competition.
Although the Association was disappointed that the ESFA, against the vote at a previous AGM, took the national inter county competitions in house, it did mean that the Midland Counties Schools Football Federation competitions could run alongside the national ones and in fact all four cups could be played to a final whereas before the two semi-final winners in the boys Under 18 and Under 16 competitions had gone forward to the national quarter-finals without a Midlands final being played.
Both the Under 18 and Under 16 squads narrowly missed out on qualification for the Midlands semi-finals – the 18s on goal difference to Humberside who were beaten by Staffordshire in the final and the 16s by one point to Lincolnshire, a point gained by the visitors in securing a 3-3 draw at Forest Town with a goal 2 minutes into added time! The Under 15’s league was badly disrupted by the late withdrawal of Northamptonshire meaning they only played two games but even so qualified for the semi-finals where they were beaten 5-1 by a very strong Staffordshire side who were themselves beaten 3-1 in the final by a Leicestershire side that Nottinghamshire had drawn 1-1 with earlier in the season.
The Under 16 Girls’ League was also badly affected by teams withdrawing and in fact only four of the ten planned fixtures were played. Nottinghamshire’s first game was against national champions Leicestershire and they recorded an excellent 2-1 win in a very tight game to avenge the defeat by their neighbours in the national competition. A 1-1 draw away to Shropshire was enough to secure them the Midlands crown for the second season running. Congratulations should especially go to Eleanor Clarke and Rachael Murray who were invited to join the England development squad. Thanks must go to Steve Pritchard at the Centre of Excellence for his support and co-operation during the season and congratulations to an excellent group of players and also many thanks to a very supportive band of parents.
In fact all four County representative squads were a pleasure to be with during the season and represented Nottinghamshire in a committed and at all times sporting way.
A brief glance at Nottinghamshire’s own internal inter district competition results soon reveals that Nottingham had a very successful campaign in 2009/2010 winning three of the five secondary titles and completing a clean sweep of all five primary cups and tournaments. One surprise was a magnificent performance from the South Notts Under 15s to win the Cobbin Cup at Meadow Lane. After a very poor season they produced an excellent display to beat fancied Worksop, Retford & District 1-0 and take the Association’s oldest trophy.
In Area D competitions, Mansfield, fielding a representative side for the first time for several years, won the Under 13 Davis Trophy and Worksop, Retford & District U15’s won the Goodhand Trophy. Nottingham lost to Derby in the Under 15 Simmonds Plate final while South Notts finished runners-up in the Under 12 Junior Star League.
The home of Notts County must have suited the South Notts players as their only other success in County Inter District competitions was also on the League Two side’s ground as their Under 13s defeated Nottingham 3-0 in the Pavis Shield final. Nottingham wrapped up the other four County Cup titles in games all played at the Nottingham Forest Academy ground – beating Worksop, Retford & District 3-2 in the U14 Norris Cup, South Notts 2-1 in the U13 Intermediate Cup, South Notts 2-0, this time in the Under 12 tie and their Under 11 squad overcame Bassetlaw 4-2 in a most entertaining game. The four primary tournaments were also won by the City squads with both the boys and girls winning the outdoor 7-a-sides and the indoor 5-a-sides.
The individual primary school tournaments as usual produced three excellent mornings of football with the boys from Seagrave in the City, Willow Brook girls from Rushcliffe and Hollywell from Kimberley in the Small Schools competition going on to represent the County in the Regional Finals. Sadly, only Hollywell managed to progress from that day to take part in the national finals held in the immaculate surroundings of the Watford FC Academy ground. Although enjoying a superb days football there was to be no national title for the Nottinghamshire side.
The Individual Schools County Cups this season, both Secondary and Primary, have been often beset by problems of teams not meeting limit dates or by withdrawing from competitions weeks after they should have played a particular game. Just one match not played in a 1st or 2nd round tie has a huge knock-on effect for the rest of the competition in the later rounds. A stricter approach will be adopted next season with teams who do not complete fixtures.
The Under 16 Hawkins Cup final between Valley School from Worksop and Rainworth’s Joseph Whitaker, the Under 13 Girls Fred Riddell Shield featuring Chilwell and Portland from Worksop played at Burton Joyce and the Under 12 Girls West Bridgford Colts Shield game between Gedling and Chilwell played on a reduced sized pitch at Meadow Lane and containing a superb winning goal from Gedling’s Charlotte Steggles that would have graced any final were probably the pick of what was an excellent series of matches. The two late Primary Finals between Fairfield and Nottingham Academy in the Majestic and the girls’ final with Greasley Beauvale and Cotgrave were also superb games.
The Association extends grateful thanks to all the clubs that provided grounds for all it’s finals and particularly to David List, the groundsman at The Poplars Sports Ground in Burton Joyce, where nine of the finals were staged. The pitches he prepares are second to none and David is always an optimistic, cheery and fantastically helpful support. Other grounds used were Collingham, Notts County’s Meadow Lane Stadium, the City Ground and the Nottingham Forest Academy pitches.
The Association once again staged all four of the Midland Regional Finals of the ESFA Small Sided Cups for the Under 11 age group. The National Finals at Watford were a month earlier than usual and because of this all four competitions were staged on the same Saturday in March at the University of Nottingham’s Grove Farm complex. This presented some rather difficult logistical problems but the day was hugely successful once more even though the last hour of the competitions were played in the pouring rain! As already mentioned, Hollywell from the Eastwood & District Association won the Small Schools event, Folwell Junior School from Leicestershire triumphed in the boy’s competition, South Birmingham topped the District tournament and Thomas Jolyffe from Warwickshire took the girls’ title. Folwell Junior went on the win the national title the following month.
The Association continues to develop it’s website which runs alongside and in conjunction with the well established Handbook. With only the first two rounds of both the Primary and Secondary cup competitions printed in the Handbook that is sent out to all competing schools, members of staff responsible for school teams must still be encouraged to use the website to gain information about the fixtures and who their opponents are in the later rounds of competitions.
The Nottinghamshire Schools Council for Sport continues to play a vital part in obtaining the financial support that allows all sports Associations in the County, including football, to provide sporting opportunities for young people in our schools. Thanks go to Gerry Mills, the Secretary and Peter Sanders, the Treasurer, for their tireless work and also to the Nottinghamshire and Nottingham Childrens’ Services Departments who continue to offer their generous financial support.
Special mention must be made of Gerry Mills who was, so rightly, awarded the MBE this year for his services to school sport – congratulations Gerry!
As always, the Association offers its sincere thanks to the following organisations and individuals:

♦ The volunteer referees who give so much of their time and commitment to the Association and Schools Football in general.
♦ Private individuals who support the Association financially.
♦ All the schools and clubs that make their facilities available to the Association and offer such a warm welcome.
♦ Nottingham Forest and Notts County who are always keen to help out whenever they can, particularly Jane Carnelly and Nick Marshall at Forest and Tony Cuthbert at County.
♦ The Nottinghamshire Football Association with whom the Association continues to enjoy an excellent relationship.
♦ The City and County Councils who continue to give the Association much needed financial support through the Nottinghamshire Schools Council for Sport.
♦ All the personnel – teachers, ex-teachers, non-teachers, parents and supporters who together combine to offer the pupils of Nottinghamshire and Nottingham schools a wide and varied programme of football competition.
Despite the lack of national success in 2010, it was once again a very rewarding experience to see so many young people in Nottinghamshire enjoying playing the game of football in an organised, structured and sporting manner throughout the season – long may it continue!

Honorary Treasurer’s Report
The Association continues to provide a great deal of varied activity for the benefit of pupils in our schools and once more there has also been much participation of schools at national level. Schools’ football goes further than providing games. It sets high standards based on sound educational principles. It is important in personal development and young people can enjoy the game more! All of the above depend upon a sound financial base.
The perceived positive balance hides significant expenditure days after the end of the Financial Year due to waiting for a Grant Aid cheque to clear before paying out. We have, however, still just more than broken even. However, there are worrying trends. Not least is the future of the life blood Grant Aid from the City of Nottingham and the Nottinghamshire County Councils. Without this we should have a greatly reduced programme. As it is, our Association has one of the best programmes in the country and our Member Associations also benefit.
The Nottinghamshire Schools Council for Sport is responsible for the grant's administration and for other supportive measures. Thanks are again given to them on behalf of all school sport. ESFA payments under grant aid have significantly helped, whilst the Nottinghamshire Football Association continues to give valuable support with specific initiatives, notably in girls’ football. Our friends at Reprotec have again given valuable support; done in such a friendly fashion.
The cost of travel is becoming an increasing burden without an apparent solution unless we can play double fixtures; this depends on availability of suitable grounds at suitable times. The ground hire situation is also worrying although our agreement with our friends at Collingham Football Club has seen us benefit. Both hire and travel are affected by biennial fluctuations of representative fixtures which cause variations. The costs of administration are also increasing although use of the internet is, no doubt, helping to curb costs.
Mr Micawber would remind us of how close financial comfort and concern may be. In this day and age there are others who would point out the same. We hope that Mr Scrooge will not be called upon! Mike Simmonds, as Development Officer, nurtures partnerships, whilst John Williamson works hard to keep the Association running. Other Committee Members, such as Bob Young and Barry Shackley also give freely of their time. No-one must be taken for granted for they perform valued tasks.
Long live schools’ football and the standards it promotes.

Development Officer’s Report
As has been stated in previous reports, the Association’s programme is so extensive that further development is a difficult task, particularly in view of the small number of individuals able to carry out our administrative work. I can only reiterate my comments of last season that the major problem of schools’ football remains one of person-power, not so much in finding Team Managers to whom we are very grateful, but people to carry out the vast amount of paper and electronic communications necessary to organise 32 competitions and 4 representative sides.
While the Association accepts that it is probably impossible for a serving teacher to take on the major posts of Hon. Secretary and Development Officer, there are numerous tasks which could be done in relatively little time by willing volunteers which would relieve the Secretary of some of the time consuming jobs which cause him to work for full days at some times of the year. It would certainly help him if some of those schools which compete in the Association’s competitions could be more pro-active in ringing in results of matches so that long delays are prevented.
The Development Officer has continued to maintain links with professional clubs in the County and to tackle the problems which sometimes arise. Nottingham Forest have again provided kit sponsorship for which Nottingham, South Notts and the County Association are extremely grateful while both Forest and Notts County have been generous in the provision of their grounds for major events in the Association’s programme. Mention must be particularly made of Nick Marshall, the Forest Academy Director, Sean England, the Education Officer, Graham Moran of Football in the Community and Jane Carnelly and Alan Bexon on the administrative side of the Club.
At Notts County, Tony Cuthbert has, as usual, been extremely supportive as have the Stadium Manager and ground staff while Mansfield Town allowed the use of Field Mill for the Midland Counties Under 16 Final and also staged the finals of the Mansfield Schools’ F.A. Cup Finals.
Relationships with the Nottinghamshire F.A. have developed during the season and the Association is grateful to Ricky Stevenson, the Development Manager, for his help with the extremely complicated application form for grant aid which the national Football Association and the E.S.F.A. asked County Schools’ Football Associations to complete twice in six weeks. We are also most grateful to Trevor Powell, the Women and Girls’ Officer of the F.A. and to Steve Pritchard, the Forest Ladies Centre of Excellence Director for their support of the County Under 16 squad for girls which is managed and administered by the Schools’ F.A.
Preliminary discussions have also taken place with the F.A. and some Competition Managers about the possible restructuring of some competitions organised by the Association as well as the introduction of Futsal for schools in Nottinghamshire which began with two tournaments organised by Mark Birkett in May. There will be more meetings in the near future to discuss other ways in which the Nottinghamshire F.A. could help the Schools’ Associations in the County.

last meeting The minutes of the 2009 AGM were read and accepted.

5. Annual Report
The Annual Report was accepted by the meeting and the new format of the Report was favourably commented upon. The Secretary was thanked by Mike Simmonds for a most comprehensive account of the past season.
6. Honorary
Treasurer’s Report
A bill for the Referee’s Dinner had been received - £1150 to be shared between South Notts, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
£650 sponsorship monies had been gratefully received from Reprotec.
£125 was raised by the Referee’s Dinner raffle (sadly Jon Hall’s last).
The report was accepted by the meeting and the Treasurer was thanked on behalf of the meeting by Mike Simmonds for his meticulous work with the accounts throughout the season.
7. Election of Officers
The Chairman proposed and was seconded by Steve Abbott that the Executive Council Officers and the Executive Council Members be elected as per the Agenda paper – this was carried unanimously.
8. Election of Members
The Chairman proposed and was seconded by Bob Donnison that the Executive Council Members be elected as per the Agenda paper – this was carried unanimously.
9. Expenses The Treasurer proposed and was seconded by Barry Shackley that expense payments should remain at last year’s level – this was carried unanimously.
10. Affiliations
The Treasurer proposed and was seconded by the Chairman that affiliations for Local Associations should remain at last season’s level – this was carried unanimously.
