Nottinghamshire Schools Football Association Annual Report Season 2011 / 2012

Honorary Secretary’s Report

After a long season in which a good number of Nottinghamshire teams reached the final stages of their respective ESFA national individual schools competitions including the Bassetlaw Primary representative side that were in the last eight in the country and took part in the finals day at Chelsea’s Cobham Academy ground, the Association were at last able to celebrate the achievement of a team becoming national champions.

On the 1 July, the Gedling School Girls Under 14 squad became the FA National Futsal Champions at the National Futsal Arena in Birmingham. Whilst the competition is not an official ESFA one, the Gedling girls qualified for the finals day through competitions at County and Regional levels run by the Nottinghamshire FA on behalf of the Nottinghamshire Schools’ FA.

Their route to the title was:

Qualified for Regionals as County winners in the Nottinghamshire Round on 22 March

Qualified for National Finals as Regional Runners Up in the East Midlands Finals on 19 May (Solar Girls, Grimsby were group winners)

National Finals, Birmingham Futsal Arena, Sunday 1st July

10 teams from all over the country qualified for the finals. They were split into 2 groups of 5 with games consisting of 11 minutes one way. Results in Gedling’s games were:

King Egbert School (North East and Yorks) drew 2-2 (Steggles x2)

Bluebell Rovers (West Mids) won 2-1 (Steggles x 2)

Walderslade Girls' School (South East Region) won 4-0 (Steggles x 2, Elliott x 2)

Highlands School (London Region) won 2-0 (Steggles x 2)

Semi Final:

Qualified as group winners for the semi final and played Solar Girls, beating them 1-0 (Steggles). Keeper Chloe Wood saved a penalty with 1 minute to go on the clock.

Final:

After skimming the cross bar and hitting the post and preparing for penalties, Tiffany Elliott scored the winning goal with 2mins 30 left on the clock - a long range strike that went in the bottom left hand corner of the goal.

After a difficult couple of years this win must be a huge fillip for the whole school – well done Gedling !

Unfortunately, Bassetlaw’s national finals day was less successful as they failed to qualify from their round robin group but still enjoyed a marvellous day out amidst the fantastic facilities of Chelsea’s Academy ground. They can, however, look back on a very successful season winning all three of the domestic titles – the County Primary Cup, together with the outdoor 7-a-side and indoor 5-a-side tournaments.

A good number of other Nottinghamshire’s squads reached the latter stages of ESFA National competitions:

Last eight in the Country:

National CE Academy U16 Boys – lost 2-0 to St Cuthbert’s High School, Newcastle upon Tyne

Arnold Hill Academy U18 Boys – lost 2-1 to Thomas Telford School, Telford

Trinity U16 Girls – lost 2-1 to Countesthorpe Community College, Leicestershire

Nottinghamshire U16 Representative side – lost 2-0 to Kent in ESFA nationals

Nottinghamshire U16 Girls Representative side – lost 2-0 to Lancashire in ESFA nationals

Bassetlaw U11 Representative squad

Last sixteen in the Country:

Bluecoat Academy U13 Boys – lost 4-3 to Meadowhead School, Sheffield

Bluecoat Academy U14 Boys – lost 5-1 to Cardinal Heenan Sports College, Liverpool

The Manor Academy U15 Boys – lost 4-3 on penalties to Roundhay School, Leeds

Trinity U15 Girls – lost 6-2 to Northampton School for Girls

South Notts U15 – lost 5-1 to Warrington in ESFA U15 Trophy

Although hardly any of the County’s representative fixtures were called off the U15 representative side were unlucky to suffer terribly from the weather and had trial after trial called off making it almost impossible to put a side together in time for the Midlands competition. The other three age group sides enjoyed reasonably successful seasons.

After trials were completed an Under 18 squad was selected to play Hertfordshire in the 2nd round of the ESFA Inter County Knock out cup. A good Hertfordshire side were comfortable winners on the night 4-1 although with a slightly flattering scoreline. It was decided after this game the squad needed strengthening and a game was arranged to play Mansfield Town U18 where a number of new nominated players were invited. This game proved very useful to both teams and it is hoped it will become a regular fixture. After the Christmas break the side entered in to its annual Midlands fixtures against Humberside, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire. In a high scoring game a strong Humberside beat us 6-4. We then went on to beat Lincolnshire 2-0 and Derbyshire 2-1 and finished top of the group. In the Midlands semi -final we had a home tie against Shropshire. In an evenly fought out game Shropshire came through 2-0.

This year’s squad of players were a credit to their schools and the County. They played the game in an excellent spirit and produced a very good standard of football. On behalf of the County, convenor Chris Hallas, would like to thank the team management of Richard Walmsley, Simon Coleman and Luke Tebbett for the commitment and support they gave the team throughout the season.

Following a very useful practice match against the County’s U18 side, the U16 squad made the long journey to Fakenham to play Norfolk in the second round of the National ESFA Cup having had a bye in the first round. An excellent performance saw them return with a 2-1 win. They then played their first Midlands group game Humberside. This was at the superb new facility of the Bradley Football Development Centre near Grimsby. With torrential rain and a howling gale blowing straight down the ground it was definitely a game of two halves – 2-0 down at half time, the team drew level only to be beaten by a scrambled goal from a corner in the final minute.

Middlesex were the next opponents in the national competition and a terrific performance brought a 2-1 victory at Nottingham University’s Highfield Sports ground. A 2-0 away win against Leicestershire in the Midlands group set the team up nicely for the long trip down to Kent in the national quarter-finals. In a very, very close match they went down 2-0 but gained many home team admirers for the quality of their football. A 1-1 draw with Lincolnshire and a 2-1 win against Derbyshire saw the side finish second in the eastern group of the Midlands competition and gave them a potentially difficult semi-final meeting away with the West Midlands. However, they turned on an excellent display running out 4-1 winners to put them into the Final against Humberside where unfortunately they could not re-produce the form that they had shown all season and were well beaten at 3-0.

Thanks got to all the squad who were a pleasure to work with over the two years they represented the County and also to managers Tim Preston and Brian Newson for their time and commitment.

The Under 16 girls’ side had a ‘curate’s egg’ of a season, some fine performances being mixed with with some disappointing ones. Against Leicestershire (4-0) and Worcestershire (4-1), the squad looked possible national champions whereas against Lincolnshire who lost heavily to Leicestershire, only an added time equaliser saved the game. This actually proved vital as the 3-3 draw enabled Nottinghamshire to qualify for the national quarter-final as second in the Midland group behind Derbyshire. The quarter-final, which was played six weeks late because of the rain and snow in January and February took place at Blackpool against Lancashire was a disappointment with the home side winning 2-0 against a weakened side which possibly was affected by the four hour journey and a long delay on the M6. On the day, Lancashire were certainly the better side and well deserved their victory; they went on to reach the final in which they lost on penalties to Hampshire.

The season ended on a high, however, when a group of only 13 players which was further stricken by two injuries during the game, defeated Derbyshire 3-2 to win the Midlands Cup for the fourth time in five seasons. Led by a superb performance by captain Izzy Sullivan, who equalised four minutes from time, a second goal of the game from Fiona Worts in extra time brought Notts the trophy.

This was a fitting end to two excellent years for nine of the squad in which they lost in a national semi-final on penalties and lost 2-1 in the Midlands Cup Final in 2010-11 and then lost in this season’s national semi-final. A very loyal group of girls deserved more than this as did the management team.

The Under 15 boys side had to withdraw from the Midland Counties Federation tournament because of six postponements of the second trial (in what many have described as a dry winter) which made making the limit dates impossible. In fact, the Midlands tournament remained uncompleted and it did prove possible to play two friendly games which suggested a promising Under 16 season in 2012-13 may be possible if the demands of the professional clubs do not disrupt the squad. A last minute equaliser brought a 2-2 draw with Derbyshire while another late goal produced a 2-1 win at Sleaford against Lincolnshire. Thanks are due to the Team Managers for retaining their enthusiasm and that of the boys in what was a very frustrating time between November and March.

In the County’s own Inter District competitions, Nottingham held the upper hand, winning all of the finals except the senior age group Cobbin Cup, where South Notts recorded a thumping 5-0 victory. In the U11 Primary Cup Bassetlaw avenged their defeats of the previous two seasons by Nottingham with an excellent 4-2 win over their City opponents

In Area D competitions South Notts enjoyed a very successful year with their U15s winning their Area League and both the U14s and the U13s finishing in runners-up spot in their respective competitions. Following on from the season just ended in which their U12 side more than held their own, Worksop & Retford will continue to run two teams at U12 and U13 next year and have been highly encouraged by the response to trials held recently both with the numbers attending and the quality of the players on view. Mansfield, with their U15 squad winning the Simmonds Plate are also enjoying a gentle resurgence of their District football programme and are looking to run three teams again next year.

As last year, the Individual Schools County Cups this season, both Secondary and Primary, were often beset by problems caused by teams not meeting limit dates or by withdrawing from competitions weeks after they should have played a particular game. Just one match not played in a 1st or 2nd round tie has a huge knock-on effect for the rest of the competition in the later rounds.

It was intended to be more strict with schools who did not complete fixtures but the decision on which team to exclude from a competition is always a difficult one as often both schools insist they have tried to make contact with each other and of course it always penalises the children who then lose their football. The horrendous weather during April was disastrous coming just as many of the competitions were reaching their final stages and many games were repeatedly called off.

All the Secondary finals were played on the superb pitches at The Poplars Sports Ground, Burton Joyce. Thanks have been offered to David List, the groundsman, who is so supportive of Notts Schools’ and also to Alan Bird, his wife Helen and Eileen Rose who have been present at all the finals to provide refreshments and on occasions to welcome teams and show them to their dressing rooms.

Thanks also must go to our refereeing friends who support us so magnificently, turning up night after night to ensure we have a full complement of officials for every final and for our representative games as well. The finals themselves were excellent affairs, mostly played in the best of spirits and as last season not one trophy shared ! Special mention to Trinity, the only school to win more than one title picking up the two older age group honours with a particularly good performance in the semi-final of the U19 John Fox Cup beating Arnold Hill, favourites for the title after having reached the last eight in the country in the ESFA national competition.

As already mentioned, the Gedling Girls U14 side rattled up a record score in the Active Sports Shield final against a very plucky but outclassed Redhill team. The U11 Girls Reprotec Primary Final produced an excellent game as did the U11 George Abbott final, probably the pick of all the games. Kinoulton and Lambley put on a pulsating display with Kinoulton scoring in the first minute, Lambley equalising on the stroke of half time only to be undone with a superb Kinoulton winner in the last minute of the game. For the first time that can be remembered, the same two teams as the previous season are to contest the Majestic Trophies Final when Pierrepont Gamston meet Bispham Drive.

The two indoor individual schools’ 5-a-side tournaments, held in the superb facilities at Trent University’s Clifton Site, were excellent events with Seagrave from the City winning their second County title of recent years and a strong West Bridgford Girls team lifting the Dora Cobbin Cup. The Outdoor 7-a-sides along with the corresponding Inter Association contest were staged at the super new 3G facility at Sutton Lawn. In the individual schools tournaments, St Philip Neri from Mansfield took the Boys title and Ryton Park, for the second year running, the Girls. Both these schools represented Nottinghamshire in the Regional Tournament held at the Highfield Sports Ground; unfortunately neither of them managed to qualify for the national finals day.

The Association once again staged all four of the Midland Regional Finals of the ESFA Small Sided Cups for the Under 11 age group on two Saturdays at Nottingham University’s Highfield Sports Ground in March on behalf of the ESFA. The Finals were sponsored by Tesco whose staff were most helpful and the gazebos and all their branding adding much colour to the two days of competition for teams as far apart as Herefordshire and Humberside.

The Association continues to run both its web site and Handbook in tandem but is still striving to encourage schools to use the web site for updates of competition results and progress.

The Nottinghamshire Schools Council for Sport continues to play a vital part in obtaining the financial support that allows all sports Associations in the County and City, including football, to provide sporting opportunities for young people in our schools. Special thanks go to Gerry Mills, the Secretary, for tireless work in his protracted negotiations with the City and County Councils to ensure that the NSCS receives what is still a substantial grant for the coming year and to Treasurer, Peter Sanders, who continually works out ways to seek out an ever diminishing pot of money.

As always, the Association offers its sincere thanks to the following organisations and individuals:

  • Reprotec for their continued invaluable support and financial assistance.
  • The volunteer referees who give so much of their time and commitment to the Association and Schools Football in general.
  • Private individuals who support the Association financially.
  • All the schools, clubs and organisations that make their facilities available to the Association and offer such a warm welcome – particularly Bilborough Pelican, Collingham, Nottingham University, Rainworth, Clipstone, Teversal and Burton Joyce Parish Council.
  • The Nottinghamshire Football Association with whom the Association continues to enjoy an excellent relationship.
  • The two Nottingham professional clubs with whom the Association continues to enjoy a close relationship.
  • The City and County Councils who continue to give the Association much needed financial support through the Nottinghamshire Schools Council for Sport.
  • All the personnel – teachers, ex-teachers, non-teachers, parents and supporters who together combine to offer the pupils of Nottinghamshire and Nottingham schools a wide and varied programme of football competition.

It appears that the Association will be able to run a full programme of competitions, representative fixtures and tournaments for the immediate future but finance and person-power continue to be subjects for much concern.

Honorary Secretary

Honorary Treasurer's Report 2010-2011

Once more, the Association has provided many opportunities for young people to participate in a great variety of activities. Schools football goes further than providing games. It sets high standards based on sound educational principles. It is important in personal development and young people can enjoy the game more! All of the above depend upon a sound financial base.

Sadly, Pharaoh’s Dream seems to be upon us. We have had some “fat years” with the great help of the City of Nottingham and the Nottinghamshire County Councils. Their grant aid has given us encouragement and, as a result, we have provided a wide range of football: for boys and girls, for young and slightly older, from inter-school to representative, from small sided games to eleven-a-side. Now, with the cuts in grant aid we face the “lean years”. Further: the cost of transport is rising, as is the cost of hiring facilities.

Sadly, our neighbouring counties are also suffering and their problems may well affect us. The loss this year may not seem too great. However, it hides a situation where there has been a carry-over from last year; we received income soon after this financial year commenced. However, there is resilience and the Nottinghamshire Schools’ Council for Sport are doing everything they can to support the army of volunteers who are the backbone of School Sport. What must their worth be in financial terms? Yet the skills and experience are freely given. The Nottinghamshire Schools Council for Sport is responsible for the grant's administration and other supportive measures. We thank them again on behalf of all school sport. They will be involved in some difficult decision making.

ESFA payments under grant aid have significantly helped, whilst The Nottinghamshire Football Association continues to give valuable support with specific initiatives, notably in girls’ football. Our friends at Reprotec Connect for have been wonderful supporters for many years and now we are even more grateful to them. We must not forget Jim Hawkins. He still sends a donation, even though living in Scotland for many years. This is a “thank you” for the opportunities given to his son.

We need to look at our programme of events and our methods of work. Certainly, we shall aim to retain as much as possible of what is one of the best programmes in the country. Administration costs need to be considered, although so much is given freely by the volunteers who run the Association! Mike Simmonds, as Development Officer, nurtures partnerships, whilst John Williamson works hard to keep the Association running. Other Committee Members, such as Bob Young and Barry Shackley plus the Team Managers also give generously of their time. No-one must be taken for granted for they perform valued tasks.

Mr Micawber is too kind to be rubbing his hands and saying “I told you so”. However, even more, we need to follow the wise advice he gave those years ago: longer than twice the seven years of Pharaoh’s Dream.

Honorary Treasurer

Development Officer’s Report

I will repeat in bold my opening remarks from the two previous Annual Reports which have brought no response :

No-one has come forward to help the five or so individuals who carry out the whole administration of one of the most active Schools’ Association in the country. As those people grow older, it can only be repeated that the outlook for the organisation of schools’ football in Nottinghamshire becomes more and more bleak. There are numerous tasks which could be done in relatively little time by willing volunteers which would relieve the Secretary and other Officers of some of the time consuming but interesting jobs.

As was stated in the Handbook for 2011-2012, over 400 school teams take part in County Cups alone, giving at least 5,500 pupils the opportunities of competitive football while other tournaments and competitions for individual schools and representative teams raise this number considerably. It would be a great pity if the many and varied activities which the Association believe bring great benefits for young people decline or disappear because of the demands on the volunteers who are presently in post.

Many of the County’s affiliated Associations are beset by the same problems, some being organised by just one person who may well have been in post for many years. The work of the affiliated Associations raises the total of school teams catered for last season to over 1500 in City and County. If anyone reading this report believes they could help in however small a way, please contact one of the Officers and you will be made most welcome.

The Development Officer continues to try and maintain links with the professional clubs in the County and to tackle the problems which sometimes arise. Nottingham Forest have again provided kit sponsorship for which Nottingham, South Notts and the County Association are extremely grateful. Nick Marshall, Forest’s Academy Director, has been particularly helpful, allowing the use of the Academy’s facilities for County and City Association Cup Finals as well as Under 10 tournaments for City and County. The Association is also extremely grateful to Sean England, the Education Officer and many other staff from the Academy for the time they devote to schools’ football. Jane Carnelly, Alan Bexon and the ground staff were again very helpful with the annual Schools’ Night at the City Ground.

Notts County, too, have been most supportive as in addition to their sponsorship of the Nottingham Association, they were able to resume the tradition of a Schools’ Night at Meadow Lane which featured the Cobbin and Pavis Cup Finals. We thank their Chairman, Ray Trew, Tony Cuthbert, Steve Hill and the Association’s other friends at the Club for their help and support.

The Nottinghamshire Football Association through Ricky Stevenson, Jody Caudwell and Trevor Powell have again been of great help to the Association by organising the Futsal training and competitions for schools which culminated in Gedling School becoming national champions at Under 14 girls’ level. The help in the completion of the Business Plan which the Schools’ Association has to submit to the English Schools’ F.A. each year is also greatly appreciated as, of course, is the support which they give to the Under 16 Girls’ representative squad. Trevor Powell instigated this but has now retired from his post of Women and Girls’ Development Officer; we wish him well and hope that he will continue to show interest in the Association’s activities as he has so generously in the past.
